On this day in 1846, Saxophone was invented

All the musical instruments that have been invented so far have a purpose. Trumpets, in early times were used to signal success, Drums on the other hand were used in religious ceremonies. Just like the Trumpet and Drum, Saxophone also holds significance in the music industry. Named after its inventor, Adolphe Sax, Saxophones has widely been used in Jazz clubs throughout the world, since. Although musical instruments have evolved over the years and no one can became the claimant of inventing instruments like Flute and Oboe. However the Saxophone can directly be credited to Adolphe Sax.

-Functioning-

Otherwise known as ‘Sax’, the instrument comes from the family of ‘woodwind instruments’; a family of musical instruments such as Flute and Reed pipes. Saxophones are generally made up of Brass and played with a single-reed mouth piece. Just like the Flute, a Sax also consists of perforations that are directly controlled by the Sax keys. It has the same functions that of Flute, but produces a completely different voice.

 -Types of saxophones-

Currently there are nine different types of Sax’s in the market. Namely, Sopranino saxophone, Soprano saxophone, Alto saxophone, Tenor saxophone, Baritone saxophone, Bass saxophone, Contrabass saxophone and Subcontrabass saxophone

Whenever discussion about Jazz starts, the first name that comes in People’s mind is of the greatest Saxophonist to ever live on the planet, John Coltrane

-In Jazz Clubs-

A concurrent figure in Louis Armstrong’s era, Sidney Bechet became the first person to develop a hotshot approach to the Sax. He was a master at playing his Soprano Saxophone and with his melancholy style of Jazz improvisation; he introduced Saxophone in early Jazz styles.

-Sax now-

Kamasai Washington is the reigning champion of Saxophone in Jazz industry.
