RCB struggles to meet ambitious target of planting 7,000 saplings

Published on: May 14, 2019 1:09 AM

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) is going to plant more than 7,000 saplings in its jurisdiction in outdated season to meet the set target of 10,000 plants in spring season. However, the experts believe that May and June are not the best months for seasonal plantation and growth.

According to details, the four vehicles containing more than 7 thousand saplings have arrived at the Rumi Park Rawalpindi. These plants saplings will be planted by the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board in Koh-e-Noor, Westridge and Industrial areas of RCB this week. These plants include different kinds of flowers and fruits including plum and peach saplings, an official informed.

However, the expert says that fruit and flowers saplings can’t bear the temperature of midsummer. These type of trees demand more water while water goes further underground in these months.

When contacted, In-charge of Gardening Branch of RCB Daniyal informed that the target plantation of 10 thousand saplings for the spring session and 28 thousand plants for the Monsoon had been set by the officials this year.

The kind of saplings – the board attempted to plant – should be planted in March or Mid of April, told an agro expert

However, due to the shortage of plant saplings, the public body could plant only 2,500 saplings during this spring, he said.

Hamid Hussain, an agriculture expert, while talking with Daily Times said, such kinds of sapling should be planted in March or Mid of April. Plantation of the sapling in this warm weather is just wastage of money and plants, and nothing else. Almost 70 to 80 percent plant sapling will not grow due to hot weather, he predicted.

An official of the RCB wishing anonymity said that gardening branch is planting these only to achieve the set target in the papers, otherwise, this weather is not suitable for any kind of plantation.
