RAWALPINDI: Liaqat Ali Khan (Shaheed) Airport, the largest ever international airport of Asia will go operational on August 14, 2017 (independence day). The Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate the new airport. This state of the art airport which is being built in the area of 45000 kanals in Fatehjang has the capacity for landing of 380 largest ever commercial aircraft of the world. The modern facilities of international standards will be available for the passengers at this airport. The state of the art automated scanning and boarding systems have been introduced at the airport to facilitate the passengers. As soon as the passengers enters the ticket No, the boarding card will come out of automated machine automatically. The passenger will board on the plane without checking by taking this card with him. 15 tunnels have also been constructed while a capacity for construction of 35 more tunnels exists therein. The facility for setting up their offices on this airport will be extended to all international airlines besides the PIA. A modern and wide ranging car parking area will also be a part of this airport. There is surplus land available at the airport for the construction of more run ways, tunnels and offices so that the airport could be expanded whenever the need arises. Keeping in view the security situation, the construction of any home or building within three kilometres around the airport has been prohibited. All the crew will be shifted to this airport five weeks before the formal inauguration of this airport. The Benazir International Airport will be returned to the PAF. The Civil Aviation department had obtained this airport on a rental lease from the PAF on the launching of PIA.
