An Indonesian Muslim cleric has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of masterminding a deadly 2016 suicide attack in Jakarta.
Aman Abdurrahman was convicted of ordering Islamic State(IS)-affiliated fighters to carry out attacks including the suicide bombing at a Jakarta cafe which left four civilians dead. It was the first attack in Indonesia claimed by IS.
The court during hearing said the cleric had proven guilty of “carrying out terrorism”.
Abdurrahman, who had declared his support for the IS, bowed down and kissed the floor when the panel of five judges announced the sentence.
According to reports, the cleric has been in the prison since 2010 but he planned the attacks from his jail cell.
Indonesia has been the victim of terrorism in past but fears of attacks have been elevated after suicide bombings in the country’s second-largest city, Surabaya, last month that were carried out by families including their young children. The Surabaya attacks claimed the lives of 26 people, including 13 attackers.
