LAHORE: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Wednesday said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) should not “shame” politicians just three months before the elections.
Speaking to the media after inquiring about the health of Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Marriyum said that for a body like NAB to inquire rumours is “disappointing”. “It is disappointing that NAB initiated inquiry against Nawaz Sharif on basis of rumours, especially when the State Bank of Pakistan and the World Bank have categorically rejected the claims.”
She continued that corruption of worth even a single penny had not been proved against the former PM, while she also raised concerns about the growing trend of “abuse and slander” in political circles across the country.
The lawmaker added that Nawaz’s only fault was being popular among the masses and being elected for the premiership thrice. “The way Nawaz Sharif is being treated is an insult to the mandate of public and this must come to an end.”
Answering a question regarding Nawaz Sharif’s comments that PML-N is up against ‘aliens’ during the coming elections, Marriyum said that ‘aliens’ are those who sent 13 reigning prime ministers and presidents packing throughout Pakistan’s 70-year history.
“Aliens have the people’s mandate in their hands and they are the ones who have sent home 13 reigning prime ministers and presidents,” Marriyum said while speaking to the media in Lahore.
The lawmaker added that “everything is now used for political point-scoring” and that there needs to be a limit to it.
She continued that despite 8 months of investigation, nothing was found against PML-N head Nawaz Sharif and that NAB officials’ statements “in favour” of the former PM tell that Nawaz is being made a victim of “political revenge”.
Marriyum took jabs at PTI Chief Imran Khan saying that the ladla Imran was set free for attacking the parliament and providing forged documents before the Supreme Court.
Turning his attention towards PPP, Marriyum said that “the opponents can not even say a word against us when it comes to performing,” while she also questioned Bilawal Bhutto regarding the performance of PPP in Sindh.
