KARACHI: A Chinese national was shot dead by unknown armed assailants in a ‘targeted’ attack in Karachi, according to police. Chen Zhu, 46, a top official at a shipping firm, received a bullet in the head as attackers fired multiple shots on his car in the posh area of Zamzama Park in Clifton. Another Chinese national who was accompanying the deceased, however, survived since he was buying vegetables from a shop at the time of the attack and took refuge in a nearby superstore when he heard the firing. The injured was shifted to the JPMC, where Dr Seemin Jamali confirmed that the Chinese national had received a head injury and was in critical condition. She later said that the man died during treatment. “LEAs have started collecting information about the shopkeepers and their employees because the victim was a regular visitor of the nearby shops,” a source privy to the matter told Daily Times. “It appears to be a targeted attack,” police said. Nine bullet casings of 9mm pistol were seized from the site of the attack. Police said that security had been provided to the Chinese national killed in the armed attack, however, no security guard was travelling with him at the time of the incident. “Tt was a well-planned attack because they did it very quickly and no eyewitness could count the number of attackers … only information we have received is they were a white car,” DIG South Azad Khan told Daily Times. “Both Chinese nationals were the employees of a Shipping Company and were residing in Lalazar area. Their families, however, are in China” SSP Jawaid Akbar Riaz said. Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal took notice of the incident and ordered deputy inspector general south to start an inquiry into the matter. Published in Daily Times, February 6th 2018.
