North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered a significant increase in the country’s nuclear weapons programme, calling for an “exponential” expansion of the national atomic arsenal. During a visit to a newly operational nuclear material production facility, Kim reviewed progress in weapons-grade nuclear material production and directed officials to further boost output to meet long-term strategic objectives.

According to state media, production capacity for nuclear materials has more than doubled over the past five years, reflecting North Korea’s continued focus on strengthening its military capabilities. Kim received briefings on newly introduced production methods that incorporate advanced technology and examined future plans aimed at accelerating the country’s nuclear development programme.
The leader argued that growing regional tensions and what he described as increasing security threats require a stronger nuclear deterrent. He reaffirmed North Korea’s policy of expanding both the size and sophistication of its nuclear forces, emphasizing the need to prepare for a prolonged strategic confrontation with its adversaries.
Meanwhile, a high-level consultative meeting on nuclear forces was held on the same day, where officials discussed plans for both qualitative and quantitative improvements to the arsenal. Kim outlined guidelines for implementing an ambitious strategy designed to increase the country’s nuclear capabilities at a much faster pace in the coming years.

Photographs released by state media showed Kim inspecting rows of cylindrical equipment inside the facility, which analysts believe may be located at the Yongbyon nuclear complex. Experts suggested the visit could be intended to strengthen Pyongyang’s position ahead of potential diplomatic engagements while demonstrating that it has no intention of slowing its nuclear programme.
International assessments estimate that North Korea possesses around 50 nuclear warheads, although the country has never officially disclosed the size of its stockpile. Analysts believe the latest announcement signals Pyongyang’s determination to further expand its nuclear capacity despite ongoing international concerns over regional security and nuclear proliferation.
