Wang Yi, Asim Munir discuss Pakistan-China cooperation

BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir in Beijing on Monday, reaffirming the longstanding strategic partnership between the two countries.

During the meeting, Wang Yi welcomed the visit of the Pakistani military chief and praised the Pakistan Army’s role in strengthening bilateral cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing. He said the friendship between China and Pakistan had remained “rock-solid and unbreakable” despite changing regional and international circumstances.

The Chinese foreign minister expressed hope that the Pakistani military would continue contributing to the traditional friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations.

Field Marshal Asim Munir briefed the Chinese side on Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts regarding the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. According to officials, Pakistan conveyed that negotiations between Washington and Tehran may be moving closer to a possible agreement.

Wang Yi also voiced support for Pakistan’s mediation and peace efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region.

Earlier, Field Marshal Asim Munir held an informal interaction with Chinese Premier Li Qiang during an official ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The two leaders exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed broader regional cooperation during the brief meeting.

Field Marshal Asim Munir is accompanying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on his official visit to China, which is focused on enhancing bilateral ties, economic cooperation and strategic coordination between the two countries.

The visit comes amid ongoing regional developments and growing engagement between Islamabad and Beijing under the framework of the China-Pakistan strategic partnership and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Chinese and Pakistani officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining close cooperation in defence, trade, infrastructure and regional stability.
