According to Saudi media reports, the driverless vehicle operates using an artificial intelligence system supported by advanced sensors and high-resolution cameras, allowing it to navigate safely within a designated route.
The Robobus is currently operating on a 700-metre track within the inner courtyard of the historic mosque, enabling visitors and worshippers to travel short distances with ease. The trial phase of the project is expected to continue for 60 days, during which its performance and safety will be evaluated.

Officials said the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve services for pilgrims and visitors, particularly in key religious sites that receive large numbers of people throughout the year.
Masjid Quba holds special significance as the first mosque built in Islamic history, making it a major destination for pilgrims visiting Madinah. The introduction of modern transport technology in such a location highlights Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to blend innovation with heritage preservation.
Alongside this development, Saudi authorities have also ramped up preparations for the upcoming Hajj season. The General Directorate of Civil Defence has activated seasonal emergency centres in Makkah and Madinah to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, multiple government departments begin full operational readiness ahead of Hajj each year, coordinating services across Makkah, Madinah and the routes connecting the two holy cities.
Authorities confirmed that 27 seasonal Civil Defence centres have been established this year, staffed with trained personnel operating around the clock to respond to emergencies and assist pilgrims.
