The United Kingdom has deployed a Royal Navy destroyer to the Middle East amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The move is part of preparations for a potential multinational mission aimed at securing commercial shipping routes. The deployment highlights growing international concern over maritime security in the Gulf region.
The Defence Ministry confirmed that HMS Dragon will be positioned in the region to support future operations. The Type 45 destroyer is expected to remain on standby for a UK and France-led naval initiative. Officials said the mission is intended to ensure freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.

According to defence sources, the deployment is precautionary and part of coordinated planning with allies. The vessel was previously stationed in the eastern Mediterranean near Cyprus. Authorities said it will be ready to respond once operational conditions allow passage through the strait.
The proposed mission has been supported by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. The initiative aims to protect international trade routes that pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Officials stressed that the effort will depend on a multinational coalition framework.
