Rubio met Pope Leo on Thursday in a closely watched 45-minute meeting at the Vatican, marking the first meeting between the pontiff and a Trump cabinet official in nearly a year.
The meeting attracted significant attention amid repeated criticism exchanged between US President Donald Trump and Pope Leo over issues including the US-Israeli conflict involving Iran and immigration policy.
Following the meeting, the Vatican released a statement saying both sides had “renewed the shared commitment to fostering good bilateral relations”.

Diplomatic analysts noted that the phrasing was unusual and appeared to acknowledge that relations currently require improvement.
Former US diplomat to the Holy See Peter Martin said the wording suggested there was still work to be done in strengthening ties.
Vatican analyst Austen Ivereigh also interpreted the statement as a sign that relations between Washington and the Vatican are not presently in an ideal state.
The Vatican statement covered both Rubio’s audience with Pope Leo and his later meetings with senior Vatican officials.
It noted that an “exchange of views” took place regarding international affairs but did not highlight any concrete agreements or shared policy positions beyond the desire to improve bilateral relations.

Observers say Vatican diplomatic language is typically highly measured, with each phrase carefully chosen to convey subtle messages.
Analysts compared the wording to previous Vatican statements following meetings with other world leaders, which more commonly include phrases expressing satisfaction over existing relations. The absence of such language in the Rubio statement was seen as notable.
Tensions between Trump and Pope Leo have reportedly intensified in recent months after the pope criticised aspects of US foreign policy and immigration measures.
Trump has publicly responded to the pontiff on multiple occasions, making the Vatican-Rubio meeting particularly significant.

While no major agreements were announced, analysts say the meeting may represent an effort by both sides to maintain dialogue despite clear differences on several international issues.
