Normal passports to be issued in 14 days

Published on: April 30, 2026 3:14 PM

The federal government has announced a reduction in the processing time for normal passports, cutting the issuance period from 21 days to 14 days as part of efforts to improve public services.

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, attended by senior officials including the federal secretary interior, director general of passports and immigration, and other relevant authorities.

Officials reviewed ongoing reforms in passport services and discussed measures aimed at increasing efficiency, transparency, and citizen convenience.

According to the interior minister, the new timeline will apply nationwide, allowing applicants to receive normal passports within 14 days instead of the previous 21-day period.

Mohsin Naqvi also directed authorities to finalise a business passport issuance framework at the earliest, indicating that a separate streamlined service may soon be introduced for business travelers.

As part of broader reforms, the government has decided to fully implement a cashless payment system at passport offices across the country. Authorities have been given a 15-day deadline to introduce the system.

Officials said the move toward digital payments is intended to improve transparency, simplify fee collection, and reduce dependence on cash transactions.

The interior minister stated that eliminating cash payments would help curb the influence of agents and middlemen who often exploit applicants by charging extra fees.

In addition, the government plans to further improve the passport home delivery service to ensure more efficient delivery of documents directly to applicants’ residences.

Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that reforms in passport services are aimed at improving the public experience and modernising administrative procedures.

He also highlighted the importance of establishing a dedicated passport authority to oversee long-term improvements and institutional reforms within the passport system.

The government says these initiatives are part of a wider agenda to digitise public services, reduce delays, and provide citizens with faster and more transparent access to official documentation. Further announcements regarding business passport services and additional reforms are expected after the completion of the implementation phase.
