Tensions between the United States and India have increased over the past year due to disagreements on oil imports, tariffs, and diplomatic differences between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Washington has been urging allies to reduce reliance on Russian and Iranian oil. However, India has continued to prioritize its energy security by sourcing crude oil from multiple suppliers, including Russia and potentially Iran. Recent reports suggest India may receive its first oil shipment from Iran in several years, following a pause since 2019 due to US sanctions.
The evolving geopolitical situation, including tensions linked to Iran and disruptions in global oil supply, has further complicated the dynamic. The US had temporarily eased restrictions to help countries manage energy needs during regional instability.

Despite differences, both countries remain key partners in defense, technology, and trade. Observers believe Rubio’s visit could provide an opportunity to manage disputes and reinforce cooperation, even as sensitive issues like energy policy remain unresolved.
