According to officials, government institutions and agencies from Canada, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have shown interest in learning about the initiative, while a World Bank delegation is expected to visit Punjab in the near future to review the programme and explore potential areas of cooperation.
The “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” scheme has been recognized as one of the world’s largest interest-free housing finance programmes. Designed to help low- and middle-income families access affordable housing, the initiative aims to address housing shortages by providing easier financing options for home ownership.
Officials said international housing experts have described the programme as a successful model that could be adapted by other developing countries seeking practical solutions to housing challenges. The initiative has also been highlighted as an example of social and affordable housing finance that promotes inclusive urban development.
A spokesperson for Punjab’s Housing Department stated that the programme was developed after studying successful housing models from different countries and incorporating best practices suited to local needs. The goal was to create a sustainable system that expands home ownership opportunities for deserving families.
Punjab’s housing policies recently received international recognition during the World Urban Forum held in Baku, where the province showcased its achievements in housing and urban development before global policymakers, development experts and international organizations.
Officials noted that Pakistan’s participation in the forum helped strengthen engagement with development partners and opened new avenues for cooperation in the housing sector. Discussions with international stakeholders focused on innovative financing mechanisms, urban planning and affordable housing solutions.
