PM&DC makes student registration mandatory for medical, dental colleges

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has approved fee increases for 19 private medical and dental colleges, while applications from 20 institutions have been deferred due to incomplete documentation and other shortcomings.

According to a notification issued by the PMDC, the decision was taken in line with recommendations made by the Committee on Medical Education constituted by the prime minister. The council has allowed the approved institutions to increase their annual tuition fees up to Rs2,147,483 for the current academic year.

Previously, the PMDC had capped the annual fee for medical and dental colleges at a maximum of Rs1.8 million, allowing a yearly increase of five per cent. For the ongoing academic year, the fee was set at Rs1.89 million, inclusive of ancillary charges. Later, the council decided that future increases would be linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), though institutions could submit applications with justification for additional revisions.

The colleges granted permission to increase fees include CMH Medical College Kharian, Shahida Islam Medical and Dental College Lodhran, Akhtar Saeed Medical and Dental College Lahore/Rawalpindi, Central Park Medical College Lahore, Niazi Medical and Dental College Sargodha, University Medical and Dental College Faisalabad, and Al Aleem Medical College Lahore, among others.

Meanwhile, applications from 20 medical and dental colleges were deferred due to missing documentation such as audit reports and other required records. The PMDC stated that these institutions would need to address the deficiencies before their requests could be reconsidered.

Parents of medical students have called for greater clarity regarding the notification, particularly about whether the approved fee amount is final or if additional charges may still be imposed under other headings. Some parents also raised concerns about excessive fees paid during the 2023–24 academic session, saying refunds or adjustments have yet to be addressed despite earlier directives.
