Dar says Islamabad pushes US-Iran diplomacy

Published on: March 3, 2026 6:56 PM

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar declared Pakistan’s firm support for Iran after a recent attack and the reported killing of Ali Khamenei. He called the killing a violation of international law and urged immediate diplomatic engagement. The escalating crisis threatens regional stability and directly affects countries across South Asia and the Middle East.

Speaking in the Senate, Dar said Pakistan stands wholeheartedly with Iran and warned against giving the issue a wrong domestic color. He confirmed that Islamabad issued its first official reaction on February 28 following the initial developments. Later, reports emerged regarding Khamenei’s martyrdom, prompting Shehbaz Sharif to release a statement expressing grief. Dar emphasized that Iran is fully aware of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and intentions.

He noted that Pakistan had earlier tried to defuse tensions when Iran faced attacks in June. Similarly, he said Islamabad once again initiated backdoor diplomatic engagement after the recent escalation. Moreover, Dar credited the prime minister and Asim Munir for playing an active and constructive role. He stressed that Pakistan’s focus remains on restoring dialogue and preventing further instability.

Despite reported progress in negotiations, Iran was attacked, Dar told lawmakers during his address. He stated that Tehran had agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons, signaling willingness for peaceful engagement. Therefore, he described the killing of Khamenei as unlawful under international norms. Additionally, he revealed that Pakistan has contacted several countries over the past three days to push diplomacy forward.

In conclusion, Dar reiterated that dialogue remains the only viable path toward lasting peace. He urged restraint from all sides to safeguard regional security and avoid further escalation. While tensions remain high, Pakistan continues diplomatic coordination with global partners. Officials hope renewed talks will reduce hostilities and stabilize the region. The government maintains that sustained engagement benefits both regional and international stakeholders.
