US President Donald Trump met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Thursday, where the two leaders discussed housing affordability and immigration concerns, signaling continued dialogue despite political differences.

The meeting, held at the White House in Washington, marked their second discussion since Mamdani’s mayoral election victory last year. Mamdani described the talks as productive and expressed optimism about expanding housing development in New York City.

“I’m looking forward to building more housing in New York City,” Mamdani said in a social media post following the meeting, highlighting housing affordability as a key priority for his administration.

During the talks, Mamdani also raised concerns about the detention of Columbia University student Elmina Aghayeva by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He said President Trump later informed him that the student would be released. The Department of Homeland Security subsequently confirmed her release while initiating removal proceedings.

Housing affordability remains a major challenge across the United States, particularly in New York City, where rising property prices and limited supply have made homeownership increasingly difficult. Trump has pledged to address housing costs ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, while Mamdani campaigned on improving affordability and expanding housing availability.

Despite policy disagreements, including criticism of federal immigration enforcement and foreign policy, both leaders have emphasized the need to cooperate on economic and housing issues. Trump, a former real estate developer, has supported increasing housing construction, while Mamdani has advocated for policies aimed at reducing housing costs and improving access.

The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by federal and city officials to address affordability challenges while balancing immigration enforcement concerns, two issues central to current political and economic debates in the United States.
