Government orders Imran Khan hospital transfer amid protests

Published on: February 15, 2026 12:47 PM

The federal government has decided to shift former prime minister Imran Khan to a hospital for urgent medical care, as political tensions escalate over his health condition. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry confirmed that authorities will also form a medical board to supervise treatment and ensure transparent evaluation. The move comes amid mounting pressure from opposition parties demanding immediate specialist intervention.

Furthermore, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that Imran’s right eye treatment will continue at a specialised facility under senior ophthalmologists. He added that the government will submit a comprehensive medical report to the Supreme Court and urged political leaders to avoid speculation. Officials maintain that humanitarian grounds, rather than political motives, guide every decision regarding his care.

Medical reports indicate that Imran’s right eye has retained only 15 percent vision due to delayed treatment and complications. Doctors diagnosed him with central retinal vein occlusion, a serious condition commonly linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular risks. Last month, specialists performed a 20-minute procedure at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences under strict monitoring, and doctors described the intervention as technically successful.

Meanwhile, authorities permitted Imran to speak by telephone with his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, for nearly 20 minutes. His sister, Aleema Khanum, described the conversation as uplifting and emotionally reassuring for the former premier. She stressed that immediate specialist treatment at Shifa International Hospital remains critical to prevent irreversible vision loss.

In addition, opposition parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan, have intensified protests by staging sit-ins at key government locations in Islamabad. Leaders such as Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan demand immediate hospital transfer and family access. They argue that delays directly affect party morale and raise serious humanitarian concerns.

Moreover, several opposition figures warned that demonstrations will continue until authorities guarantee proper treatment and regular family contact. Government officials, however, insist that they are prioritising medical needs while maintaining law and order. As political rhetoric intensifies and health concerns persist, the hospital transfer decision may shape both the legal proceedings and the broader political climate in the coming days.
