The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly has constituted a 15-member special house committee to investigate the mob attack on Radio Pakistan Peshawar building that took place on May 9 and 10, 2023, during protests following the arrest of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan.

According to a statement issued by the office of Speaker Babar Saleem Swati on Friday, the committee was notified under Rule 237 of the Assembly’s Rules of Procedure after the house approved a motion seeking a formal probe into the incident. The provincial cabinet had earlier, on December 5, endorsed the formation of a special committee to investigate the torching of the state broadcaster’s premises.

The Radio Pakistan building was set ablaze during violent protests in May 2023, resulting in the destruction of broadcast equipment, historical audio recordings and three vehicles. A staff member also sustained burn injuries and was hospitalised following the attack.
On December 15, lawmakers from both treasury and opposition benches unanimously approved a motion, tabled by Law Minister Aftab Alam Afridi, to constitute the committee. The motion authorised the speaker to determine the committee’s composition and mandate in line with assembly rules.
Under its terms of reference, the committee will ascertain the “actual incident” that occurred over the two days in May 2023. It will examine the causes, reasons and circumstances surrounding the violence, and determine whether the attack was the outcome of an organised conspiracy.
The committee will also review the role of law enforcement agencies at the time, collect relevant evidence and propose recommendations and guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future. Its findings and recommendations will be presented before the provincial assembly upon completion of the inquiry.
The 15-member panel includes nine lawmakers from the treasury benches and six from the opposition. Law Minister Aftab Alam will head the committee, along with MPAs Tariq Saeed, Malik Adeel Iqbal, Mohammad Israr, Asif Khan, Abdul Ghani, Fazal Ilahi, Samiullah and Tariq Mahmood.

Opposition members include PPP’s Ahmad Karim Kundi, JUI-F’s Adnan Khan and Sajjadullah, PTI-P’s Arbab Mohammad Waseem, ANP’s Mohammad Nisar and PML-N’s Mohammad Rashad Khan.
