Villa face Chelsea test as Premier League title race tightens

Villa face Chelsea test as Premier League title race heats up

Aston Villa face a defining test of their Premier League credentials when they host Chelsea, as the title race intensifies heading into a crucial run of festive fixtures.

Unai Emery’s side sit third in the table, just three points behind leaders Arsenal, yet remain widely viewed as outsiders for the crown. Despite that scepticism, Villa’s recent form has been formidable. Their 2-1 home victory over Manchester United marked a 10th straight win in all competitions — a feat the club had not achieved in the top flight since 1914.

Central to Villa’s surge has been the emergence of England midfielder Morgan Rogers. After failing to record a goal or assist in his first seven appearances of the season, Rogers has since registered 11 goal involvements in his last 15 matches. His finishing has been particularly eye-catching, with seven Premier League goals coming from just 2.86 expected goals, underlining his clinical edge.

Even so, data analysts Opta give Villa only a five per cent chance of winning their first English title since 1981. Emery’s men will have the chance to challenge that narrative with back-to-back fixtures against fellow contenders Chelsea and Arsenal, matches that could significantly shape the title picture.

Elsewhere, Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces a growing attacking dilemma. Mohamed Salah is away on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Egypt, while Alexander Isak is expected to miss at least two months after fracturing his leg. Slot has steadied Liverpool after a poor run earlier in the season, lifting the champions to fifth, but questions remain over where the goals will come from. Summer signing Hugo Ekitike, with eight league goals, now carries much of the burden ahead of a home clash with bottom club Wolves.

Manchester United also suffered a setback after captain Bruno Fernandes sustained an apparent hamstring injury against Villa. Manager Ruben Amorim has ruled him out of Friday’s match against Newcastle, describing the midfielder as “impossible to replace” as United look for others to step up.
