The case revolves around the purchase of an expensive Bulgari jewellery set at a throwaway price, which prosecutors argued amounted to corruption and criminal misuse of state property. Both defendants were indicted in December last year and have since been embroiled in legal proceedings attracting nationwide attention.
Judge Arjumand’s verdict comes amid a politically charged environment, with the opposition and supporters of the former prime minister closely monitoring developments. The court’s decision also included fines, although the details of the financial penalties were not immediately disclosed.
This ruling is expected to have significant political implications, given Imran Khan’s role as a prominent opposition leader and former head of government. Reactions from political parties, legal experts, and civil society groups are anticipated in the coming hours.
The case highlights ongoing scrutiny of the use of Toshakhana assets by public officials, a mechanism meant for state-owned gifts and property. Legal analysts note that this verdict may set a precedent for future corruption cases involving high-ranking officials.
