The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) temporarily closed the affected section of the M5 from 6am to 11:30am to ensure motorists’ safety. Traffic was diverted to the National Highway, causing heavy congestion near interchanges at Zahir Pir, Uch Sharif, Jhangra, Jalalpur Pirwala, and Shujabad.
NHMP spokesperson Imran Shah advised motorists to exercise caution during fog, maintain lane discipline, avoid overspeeding, use fog lights, and limit unnecessary travel. Authorities recommended travelling between 10am and 6pm to reduce the risk of accidents on foggy stretches.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts that fog will persist across multiple areas in Punjab, including Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, and Lahore, until Thursday. Foggy conditions are also expected in Dera Ghazi Khan, Sargodha, and Jhelum later this week.

Fog has caused similar disruptions in Punjab in the past, with motorway closures affecting road, rail, and air travel. Low visibility has previously led to flight delays, cancellations, and train service interruptions, highlighting the risks posed by seasonal fog in the region.
Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely and urge drivers to remain vigilant while travelling on affected roads.
