
China on Monday strongly pledged to defend its sovereignty over Taiwan, warning that no external interference will be tolerated. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson called Taiwan the “first red line” in China–US relations, emphasizing absolute resolve in upholding national integrity.
The pledge came after the United States released its latest National Security Strategy on Friday, outlining a plan to strengthen military presence in the Indo-Pacific to discourage conflict with Beijing over Taiwan. China reacted swiftly and cautioned Washington to handle the Taiwan issue with “utmost prudence.”

Beijing urged the US to stop supporting what it described as “Taiwan-independence separatist forces” seeking separation by force. At the same time, Chinese officials said they remain open to working with Washington to maintain stable diplomatic ties while protecting China’s core security interests.
Meanwhile in Taipei, the new US security policy received strong support from Taiwan’s leadership. Taiwan’s President expressed gratitude for the US move, while the Defence Minister reaffirmed the island’s commitment to strengthen its self-defence capabilities.

Taiwan has already planned to ramp up defence spending, targeting 5% of GDP by 2030. It also recently announced a fresh $40 billion defence package to be invested between 2026 and 2033 — a clear signal it intends to prepare for potential threats.
