The Sindh High Court Bar wrote to the Chief Justice informing him about the planned protest march from the Sindh High Court parking lot to the Chief Minister’s House.

The protesters demanded that the Sindh government withdraw its appeal filed in the Supreme Court and take immediate steps to protect the historically and culturally significant site. According to the Bar, the march aims to present these demands directly to the chief minister.

In a parallel move, the Karachi Bar Association organized a rally starting at the City Court at 11:30 a.m., proceeding to the Governor House. A general body meeting outside the Governor House was also scheduled as part of the demonstration. The lawyers stressed the need to preserve Karoonjhar Hills as an ancient heritage site vital to local traditions and culture.

Karoonjhar Hills, located in Tharparkar’s desert district, are known for their unique granite rocks, some of the oldest on earth, and deposits of China clay. The hills are home to diverse flora and fauna, including peacocks and deer, and serve as a crucial water source for humans, animals, and birds in Nagarparkar.

Beyond their ecological significance, the hills symbolize centuries of indigenous culture, rituals, folklore, songs, and religious harmony. For years, illegal excavation for precious stones has threatened the site, often involving influential political figures. Civil society organizations have campaigned to have Karoonjhar declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site to protect the region’s millennia-old culture.
