Karoonjhar Hills, located in Tharparkar’s desert district, are covered with unique granite rocks and China clay, constituting some of the oldest rocks of the Earth’s crust. The hills serve as a vital source of water for humans, birds, and animals, and are home to wildlife such as peacocks and deer.
Beyond its ecological importance, Karoonjhar Hills symbolize the civilization of indigenous communities, reflecting their rituals, folklore, songs, tales, and thousands of years of religious harmony.

For years, the hills have been under threat due to illegal stone cutting, reportedly in connivance with influential politicians and other powerful entities. Civil society organizations have campaigned to have the site declared a World Heritage Site, aiming to preserve the thousands-year-old culture associated with the area.
