Israel launches targeted strike in Gaza despite ongoing ceasefire

Published on: October 26, 2025 1:22 PM

Israeli forces carried out a “targeted strike” in central Gaza on Saturday, claiming to have eliminated a militant allegedly planning an attack on Israeli troops. The Israeli military stated that the strike was directed at a member of the Islamic Jihad group, accusing him of preparing imminent assaults despite the US-backed ceasefire currently in effect. The incident marks another violation of the fragile truce that has held for more than two years since the devastating Gaza war began.

Witnesses reported that a drone struck a moving vehicle, setting it ablaze and causing panic in nearby neighborhoods. Local medics confirmed that four individuals were injured in the explosion, though no deaths were immediately reported. Residents also claimed that Israeli tanks shelled parts of eastern Gaza City shortly after the strike, raising fears of a potential escalation. The Israeli military has not issued further details or responded to additional inquiries regarding the tank fire.

The ceasefire agreement, brokered by the United States and regional partners, remains under strain as both Israel and Hamas continue to trade accusations of violations. Israel insists that it will respond to any “imminent threats,” while Hamas accuses Tel Aviv of undermining peace efforts through provocative actions. Analysts warn that repeated skirmishes could unravel months of diplomatic progress and reignite full-scale conflict across the densely populated enclave.

In a separate development, several Israeli media outlets reported that Israel had allowed Egyptian officials to enter the Gaza Strip for the first time in nearly two years. Their mission, reportedly coordinated with both sides, is to help locate the remains of hostages abducted during the Hamas-led assault on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023. That attack triggered the war, which left tens of thousands dead and displaced millions of Palestinians.

Under the terms of the ongoing ceasefire, Hamas has pledged to return all hostages still held in Gaza, though the remains of 18 abductees are believed to remain unaccounted for. Families of missing Israelis have urged both sides to accelerate recovery efforts and avoid further violence that could jeopardize the process. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has not commented on the latest strike, but the renewed military action threatens to test the durability of the already fragile truce.
