JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA: Sam Rivers, the renowned bass player for the nu metal band Limp Bizkit, has died at the age of 48, according to social media posts from his bandmates.
While the band did not disclose the cause or location of his death, they remembered Rivers as “pure magic” and “the soul in the sound.” “From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced,” Limp Bizkit wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.”
Frontman Fred Durst shared an emotional video on Sunday, recalling how the two met at a Jacksonville Beach club before rising to global fame. “I’ve shed gallons and gallons of tears since yesterday,” Durst said, adding, “He really did have an impact on the world, and his music is a gift that’s going to keep on giving.”

Rivers had previously struggled with liver disease caused by heavy drinking and underwent a liver transplant in 2015. He briefly left the band before rejoining three years later. Durst described Rivers as “so talented I can’t explain,” crediting him with a “beautiful sadness” in his bass playing. The two shared a deep appreciation for grunge music, particularly Mother Love Bone, Alice in Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots.
Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, Limp Bizkit rose to prominence in the late 1990s by blending heavy metal, alternative rock, and rap, producing hits like Break Stuff and Rollin’.
The band’s quirky energy defined albums such as Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000), and they recently released a new single, Making Love to Morgan Wallen. Limp Bizkit had been scheduled to begin a Central and South American tour in late November, starting in Mexico City. No official word has yet been released about possible tour changes or memorial plans for Rivers.
