ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has warned that motorists driving above 150 kilometres per hour on motorways will face registration of a first information report (FIR).
Chairing a review meeting on the performance and strategy of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), the minister directed strict enforcement of overspeeding and axle-load policies. He said vehicles exceeding 120 km/h would be fined, while those going beyond 150 km/h would be subjected to criminal proceedings.
Aleem Khan emphasised that accidents must be prevented through awareness campaigns, pamphlet distribution, and the installation of warning boards at motorway entry points.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the performance of the Motorway Police, he ordered the withdrawal of all official staff working at officers’ residences, stating that police personnel should not serve as barbers, cooks, or attendants. He stressed that officers must focus on public service rather than personal comfort.
The minister also reviewed proposals to outsource the vehicle fitness inspection system and adopt electronic monitoring models used in developed countries. He instructed the NHMP to present concrete plans for strengthening vigilance against crimes on motorways.
Issuing a one-week deadline for visible improvement, Aleem Khan warned of strict measures in case of non-compliance. He added that only efficiency and accountability would justify future incentives for the Motorway Police.
“Holding offices is not a privilege but a responsibility to serve the nation,” he remarked.
