Lahore launches anti-smog guns to fight pollution

Published on: October 2, 2025 3:15 PM

Punjab has introduced anti-smog guns in Lahore for the first time, following the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. These machines are aimed at reducing pollution and improving air quality in the provincial capital. The initiative comes as smog continues to worsen every winter, posing serious threats to public health and disrupting daily life. Officials believe that using this technology will help decrease respiratory illnesses by reducing harmful particles in the air.

Each gun is attached to a tanker carrying nearly 16,000 liters of water, which is sprayed up to 100 meters into the air. The mist generated settles dust and other pollutants, creating a cleaner environment. Authorities explained that this large-scale spraying method is effective in reducing the causes of lung and respiratory diseases, which increase during the smog season. By actively targeting polluted areas, the government hopes to control the situation before it worsens in the coming weeks.

Fifteen of these anti-smog guns have already been manufactured locally, while five more are in the production process. This step highlights the province’s focus on creating homegrown solutions for environmental challenges. Officials emphasized that producing such technology locally will save costs and ensure timely availability of the machines in the future. Furthermore, the government plans to expand the use of these guns if the results in Lahore prove effective.

Similar machines are already being used in countries like China and India, where smog has been a persistent issue for many years. By adopting the same practice, Punjab is moving towards international standards for combating pollution. Experts say that while anti-smog guns are not a permanent solution, they can provide short-term relief and significantly reduce the concentration of harmful particles in densely populated areas.

The government has also urged citizens to cooperate by avoiding unnecessary burning of waste and adopting environmentally friendly practices. With the winter season approaching, when smog typically intensifies, officials are hopeful that this technology will help ease the crisis. If successful, this initiative could serve as a model for other cities across Punjab, encouraging further investment in innovative solutions for environmental protection.
