A United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon reported that an Israeli drone crashed into its headquarters in Naqoura without causing casualties. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed that the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, raising concerns about regional tensions. The force emphasized that Israeli drone flights over Lebanon violate U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls on both sides to respect each other’s airspace.
UNIFIL’s explosive ordnance disposal team immediately secured and neutralized the drone after it hit the headquarters. According to the statement, the drone was not armed but was fitted with a camera, suggesting it was being used for surveillance purposes. The Israeli military later confirmed ownership of the drone but did not offer any public explanation regarding the crash or its mission in Lebanese airspace.

The peacekeeping mission noted that while its personnel are trained and prepared to respond to threats, the device appeared to have fallen on its own. UNIFIL reminded all parties that such incidents risk escalating tensions in an already volatile area. The force warned that repeated violations of Resolution 1701 undermine the fragile peace maintained since the end of the Israel-Hezbollah war.

This event follows a similar occurrence just two weeks ago when Israeli drones dropped four grenades near UN peacekeepers clearing roadblocks in southern Lebanon. No injuries were reported in that incident either, but UNIFIL expressed serious concerns over the safety of its personnel and the increasing frequency of such confrontations.
The most recent Israel-Hezbollah war, which reignited in late September 2024, killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, and caused an estimated $11 billion in damage. In Israel, 127 people, including 80 soldiers, lost their lives. The conflict began when Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on October 8, 2023, following a deadly Hamas-led incursion into southern Israel that sparked the ongoing war in Gaza.
