China has ordered schools and businesses to shut in 10 cities ahead of Super Typhoon Ragasa. Authorities warned of severe wind, rain, waves, and floods. Millions of people are affected across the country’s south. Factories in the manufacturing heartland will also close.
Shenzhen, China’s tech hub, evacuated 400,000 residents as Ragasa approached. Emergency management officials urged citizens to stay indoors except for essential work. Other Guangdong cities including Chaozhou, Zhuhai, Dongguan, and Foshan implemented similar measures.
The typhoon generated winds of 230 kilometers per hour over the South China Sea. It previously struck parts of the Philippines, causing damage and disruption. Hong Kong issued typhoon signal 8, its third highest alert, shutting most businesses and transport.
Hong Kong residents stocked up on food and supplies amid fears of closures. Windows were taped in homes and shops to reduce glass damage. Over 700 flights were canceled in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Guangdong authorities evacuated 770,000 people, with over one million expected to relocate.
Typhoon Ragasa is the strongest tropical cyclone this year in the region. Officials continue urging residents to follow safety instructions. People are warned to stay indoors until the storm passes, minimizing risk.
