A 22-year-old trade school student is in custody for the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The accused, Tyler Robinson, awaits formal charges next week, according to Utah Governor Spencer Cox. Robinson was arrested after his own relatives informed police of his involvement. Authorities praised the family for helping end the 33-hour manhunt.
The shooting occurred at Utah Valley University during an outdoor event attended by 3,000 people. Kirk, a high-profile conservative and close ally of Donald Trump, was shot from a rooftop. The sniper fled in the chaos. A bolt-action rifle was found nearby. Surveillance footage and evidence from the Discord app linked Robinson to the crime.
Police arrested Robinson at his parents’ home, located over 400 kilometers from the scene. Forensic teams also searched his nearby apartment in St. George. Authorities held him on suspicion of aggravated murder and other charges. Officials found bullets at the scene engraved with disturbing messages, one of which read: “Here fascist! CATCH!”
Governor Cox called the killing a “watershed moment in American history.” He compared it to past political assassinations and said it was “an attack on all of us.” Both Republicans and Democrats condemned the violence. However, political blame quickly spread. Trump and allies accused the left of inciting hate. Democrats blamed inflammatory rhetoric and weak gun laws.
Experts said the shooter may not fit neatly into one political category. Some described him as influenced by conspiracy theories and fringe ideologies. Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, called her husband a martyr. She vowed his movement would continue and urged youth to join Turning Point USA, the group he co-founded.
