Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that India and the United States still shared “very positive” ties. His remarks came after President Donald Trump downplayed earlier concerns about “losing India” to China and highlighted their personal friendship.
Tensions grew recently after Washington imposed high tariffs on Indian imports. The United States accused India of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine by buying discounted oil. Despite this friction, leaders from both countries continue to emphasize partnership and shared strategic interests.
Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties.

Modi expressed his appreciation for Trump’s words through a post on X. He stressed that India and the United States had a forward-looking and comprehensive global partnership. His statement sought to ease doubts about bilateral cooperation and reaffirm strong ties.
Meanwhile, Trump assured reporters that he would “always be friends with Modi.” He added that “India and the United States have a special relationship.” He insisted there was nothing to worry about despite his previous critical remarks.
The exchange came after Modi visited China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. The rare visit signaled improving ties between New Delhi and Beijing. However, Modi’s reaffirmation of friendship with Washington showed India’s intent to balance relations with both powers.
