KARACHI – Light rain fell across various parts of Karachi early Sunday morning, offering brief relief from the recent spell of humid, overcast weather. Areas such as Gulistan-e-Jauhar, North Karachi, Malir, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal received showers, with the highest rainfall of 2.3mm recorded on University Road. Other locations like the airport and PAF Base Faisal recorded about 2mm, while Keamari and Surjani Town saw only 0.2mm.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), more monsoon showers are expected in Karachi later this month. The temperature is likely to range between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. As a precaution, the Sindh government cancelled local government staff holidays and initiated emergency response measures to ensure quick drainage in low-lying areas.
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that emergency teams were on standby across the city. He emphasised that efforts are underway to prevent waterlogging and other urban flooding issues that typically follow moderate to heavy rainfall in Karachi. Meanwhile, meteorologists are closely observing a weather system currently over southwestern Uttar Pradesh, India, which is moving toward Rajasthan and could reach Sindh by Friday.
If the system progresses westward, it may bring heavier rain to multiple districts in Sindh, including Karachi. For now, only moderate rainfall has been forecast for the city. The PMD is actively tracking the monsoon’s path to provide timely updates to residents and local authorities in southern Pakistan, where preparedness remains crucial.
Nationwide, the monsoon season has turned deadly, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reporting 202 fatalities, including 96 children. Punjab recorded the highest number of deaths at 123, followed by 40 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 21 in Sindh, and 16 in Balochistan. Islamabad and Azad Jammu and Kashmir reported one fatality each.
The causes of death ranged from house collapses and flash floods to electrocution and lightning strikes. Over 560 people have been injured, including 182 children. As monsoon rains continue across the country, authorities urge the public to stay alert and follow safety advisories to prevent further loss of life.
