Flash flood fear: NDMA issues red alert for Punjab, KP & Balochistan

Published on: July 15, 2025 6:27 PM

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flash flood alert for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan. Heavy monsoon rains, expected to persist through July 17, could trigger flooding across low-lying plains and hilly regions.

In Punjab, cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad are at risk of significant water accumulation, especially in drainage-challenged neighborhoods. The NDMA urges residents to stay indoors, avoid short routes through flood-prone areas, and rely on official updates. Rescue and clean-up teams stand ready in these urban centers.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, districts such as Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, and Peshawar may face heavy rainfall, leading to rising streams, land erosion, and landslides. Authorities have pre-positioned emergency responders and equipped local shelters to receive flood-affected families.

Balochistan’s Quetta, Zhob, Qilla Saifullah, and Khuzdar will likely encounter rain-thunderfall, heightening the chance of flash floods in nullahs and ravines. Local administrations have been advised to grit remote roads and reinforce vulnerable bridges to prevent collapse under storm stress.

Recent sharp monsoon activity, fueled by a low-pressure system over India’s Madhya Pradesh and a westerly weather wave, has claimed more than 110 lives since late June—mainly due to electrocution and slipping into floodwaters. The NDMA is urging households to secure loose items, avoid open drains, and monitor communications from district disaster units.
