KARACHI: A suspected robber was shot dead during an encounter with police in Site Area on Monday. Police said that two robbers riding a motorcycle were snatching cash and valuables from people near Habib Bank Chowrangi. “A police party spotted them. In the resulting shootout, one of the robbers was killed. However, his companion managed to escape under cover of fire,” police said. The police also claimed to have seized a pistol from the suspected robber. The body was shifted to Civil Hospital, Karachi and later shifted to Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for identification. Separately, a suspected member of a banned militant outfit was arrested during a raid conducted on a tip-off in Gulberg locality. The suspect was identified as Saad alias Dry. A Rangers spokesperson said that the suspect arrested was affiliated with the banned militant outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, adding that the accused was involved in firing on Rangers troops in New Karachi as well as target killings, extortion and forced closure of shops in 2012. Four more suspects were arrested by Rangers during separate raids in parts of city including Gulberg, Jamshed Quarters and Brigade. The suspects arrested were identified as Hassan, Ajab Gul, Sajid and Adeel. A Rangers spokesperson said that the suspects arrested were involved in various cases of street crimes and mobile snatching. Meanwhile, five more suspects were arrested during various raids conducted in various localities, including Darakshan, Jamshed Quarters and Awami Colony areas. The arrested suspects were identified as Abdul Munaf, Muharram Ali, Jan, Feroz Khan alias Sarwar and Mazhar Hussain alias Raja. The spokesperson said that the suspects arrested were involved in drug peddling. The spokesperson also claimed to have recovered a huge cache of arms, ammunitions and narcotics from their possession while the suspects were handed over to the police.
