Pre-monsoon rain hits Lahore and wide areas, bringing relief and some tragedy

LAHORE – Heavy pre-monsoon rain lashed Lahore and many parts of the country early Thursday, offering relief from the hot and muggy weather. However, the rain also caused damage and claimed lives in some areas.

In Punjab, rain-related incidents led to the death of a child and injuries to four others. In Okara’s Riazabad, a roof collapse killed a young girl named Dua Fatima and injured two children, Mehwish and Iram. Rescue teams worked quickly to save the injured.

Another roof collapse in Talwandi near Kasur seriously injured two children who were rushed to a nearby hospital. In Hujra Shah Muqeem, roofs of three houses collapsed, but fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Lahore experienced heavy rainfall in areas including Garhi Shahu, Model Town, Ferozepur Road, and Canal Road. The rain caused power outages as the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) reported multiple feeder trips. WASA staff were put on alert following instructions from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Rainfall also continued intermittently in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Cities like Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Mianwali received rain, causing flooding in low-lying areas. In the northern regions, Murree, Azad Kashmir, and Abbottabad saw heavy rains that led to flooding and landslides, blocking key highways and stranding tourists.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning of storms and more rain over the next 12 to 24 hours, urging people to stay cautious as the monsoon season progresses.
