Sir: The Prime Minister has announced a ‘martyrs’ fund’ for police to help those that suffer injuries or death in the line of duty. This is a good move, and one that will go some way in helping the police and the families of those policemen and women that lose their lives. However, the government should spend most of its time and energy on this issue looking at ways to improve the salaries of policemen and women and also ensuring that the are provided with the best training and equipment. That will be an even better move as it will reduce the number of casualties we suffer during terror attacks. The police are our first line of defence against internal threats, and their strength and the salaries they are paid are appalling. For a nation that is at war and is facing an enemy within, that is not good enough. The Chief Minister of Punjab recently announced a doubling of salaries for the police; one hopes that happens quickly, and that this move is replicated for police forces in all provinces.
