WASHINGTON: Looks like Barbie is getting a documentary treatment! Television network Hulu has ordered a documentary about the iconic doll, as announced recently at the Television Critics Association`s summer press tour, reports The Hollywood Reporter. It is an addition to the upcoming live-action feature, in which Anne Hathaway is in talks to replace Amy Schumer. The untitled project will take a retrospective look at Barbie`s unexpected origins to becoming the most popular doll ever created. The film will include newly discovered footage and unprecedented access to the inner workings of manufacturer Mattel during a major Barbie reinvention. The documentary will also look at 60 years of women in pop culture through the Barbie frame. Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy company Mattel, Inc and launched in March 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration. Barbie is the figurehead of a brand of Mattel dolls and accessories, including other family members and collectible dolls. Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion doll market for over fifty years, and has been the subject of numerous controversies and lawsuits, often involving parodies of the doll and her lifestyle. Mattel has sold over a billion Barbie dolls, making it the company’s largest and most profitable line. Published in Daily Times, July 30th , 2017.
