
KARACHI: Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) AD Khawaja on Tuesday directed that an awareness drive should be initiated to help check traffic accidents.
He said that the special campaign to this effect should be made at the traffic sections’ level. The IGP stated that stress should be laid on observing the traffic rules and regulations. He said that the people should be apprised of the harm caused because of over-speeding, overloading, violation of one-way route, wrong side overtaking and underage driving.
The purpose of the drive, he said, is to aware people about traffic rules and regulations, he said, adding that installation of safety boxes be ensured to monitor the entry timings of heavy traffic and containers into the metropolis. The IGP directed that a traffic survey of all the roads in the city be carried out in collaboration with the organisations concerned.
He said that timings of the academic institutions and offices be also kept in mind to ensure smooth flow of vehicles during the peak hours. The IGP was of the view that the traffic management and regulatory system should be upgraded and traffic light signals be adjusted in accordance with the flow of traffic determined as a result of the survey. Deployment of traffic police personnel be ensured at the roundabouts, U-turns, traffic junctions, he said, adding the traffic wireless control should issue directive about the traffic flow on various roads from time to time.
