A medical board constituted to investigate nine-month-old Nashwa’s death at Darul Sehat Hospital finalised its post-mortem report on Tuesday.
The three-page report was handed over to the Sindh’s Health Department. It had been finalised in the light of the medical report and the chemical examination of the infant’s body. “Nashwa died after being administered the wrong injection. Her brain and other body parts had stopped working while her lungs were also affected. Fast intravenous administration of potassium chloride (KCl) was the cause of the death,” the report said.
The board had been formed on the directive of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and included Professor Farhat Mirza, Police Surgeon Dr Qarar Abbasi and Dr Samia Tariq.
On April 14, Nashwa was paralysed after being administered the wrong injection by the staff of Darul Sehat Hospital. After battling for her life for eight days, the infant had breathed her last on April 22 at Liaquat National Hospital. According to an earlier report by the Sindh Health Care Commission, the infant had been administered an overdose of potassium chloride via an injection.
More than 20 people were nominated in the case. The hospital was sealed following Nashwa’s death, but the Sindh High Court ordered for it to be reopened on May 3.
On May 4, a local court in Karachi had extended the interim bail granted to owners of Darul Sehat Hospital. The judge granted an extension till May 7 in the bail given to Amir Chishti and Farhan when both accused appeared before the court after their bail expiry.
