Sit-in demanding Rao Anwar’s arrest enters sixth day

Published on: February 6, 2018 4:35 PM

ISLAMABAD: The sit-in staged by tribal people outside the National Press Club against Naqeebullah Mehsud’s alleged encounter entered its sixth day on Tuesday.

The protest, organised by Mehsud tribe’s youth progressive movement, demands arrest of suspended Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Rao Anwar, who spearheaded Naqeebullah’s alleged encounter in Karachi last month.

Members of the tribe also complained about a lack of media coverage, while they also vowed to continue the sit-in until their demands are met and that justice is served to the slain’s family. The protesters arrived at the nation’s capital from Dera Ismail Khan on Thursday.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Advisor to the Prime Minister Amir Muqam met the protest participants on Monday, while PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is expected to pay the protesters a visit later today, according to the advisor.

Naqeebullah was allegedly apprehended by police in Karachi on January 2, 2018, and was killed on January 17 in a controversial encounter by a police team headed by Rao Anwar in the Usman Khaskheli Goth on the outskirts of Karachi.

Police on Tuesday last week raided a house in Islamabad’s F10 region in search of Rao Anwar, but were unable to find him. Later, the former SSP claimed via a whatsapp message that he did not own the raided property.

Scores of people have gathered outside National Press Club to protest against the extrajudicial killing of Naqeebullah
