Punjab cabinet approves 'people-friendly' provincial budget for FY2026-27 - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

The Punjab cabinet has approved the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif in Lahore on Tuesday, marking a key step ahead of the formal presentation of the financial plan.

According to details shared during the meeting, the chief minister described the upcoming budget as “pro-people” and emphasized that the government is committed to designing a financial framework focused on public welfare and relief for citizens. She said the administration is making continuous efforts to ensure that the budget reflects the needs of the general public.

Maryam Nawaz praised the performance of provincial ministers, stating that their efforts were contributing to improved governance and implementation of development initiatives across the province. She urged cabinet members to maintain their commitment and continue working with dedication to serve the people of Punjab.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing provincial development and welfare programmes, including the ‘Suthra Punjab’ cleanliness initiative and the ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ housing scheme. The chief minister said both projects were being implemented effectively and were aimed at improving living standards and providing essential facilities to citizens.

Officials had earlier indicated that the provincial budget for FY2026-27 includes proposals for salary and pension increases for government employees, reflecting efforts to provide financial relief amid rising cost-of-living pressures.

The government has also reiterated its focus on reducing the financial burden on citizens while continuing development spending and social welfare programmes. Authorities said the budget aligns with the broader governance priorities of the ruling party, with emphasis on infrastructure development, housing, and public service delivery.

The approval by the cabinet clears the way for the formal presentation of the budget in the provincial assembly, where it is expected to outline detailed allocations for development schemes, salaries, pensions, and ongoing welfare projects across Punjab.
