
Authorities in India’s capital, Delhi, have announced a citywide crackdown on fire safety violations following a devastating hotel fire that killed 21 people, including several foreign nationals.

The blaze erupted at a hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi on Wednesday, making it the deadliest fire incident in the city since 2022. According to reports, the hotel was frequently used by patients receiving treatment at a nearby hospital and their accompanying family members.
In response to the tragedy, the Delhi government said it would launch a comprehensive inspection campaign targeting guest houses, hotels and other establishments suspected of violating fire safety regulations and building bylaws. Authorities warned that premises found non-compliant would face strict action, including closure and legal proceedings against those responsible.
Officials confirmed that a criminal case has been registered and the owner of the building has been arrested as investigations continue into the cause of the fire and possible negligence.
The Chief Minister’s Office stated that enforcement agencies would conduct inspections across the city to identify properties operating without adequate safety measures. The initiative aims to prevent similar incidents and improve compliance with fire prevention standards.
The lapses that culminated in the tragic fire at a guest house in Malviya Nagar will be examined with utmost seriousness, and accountability will be fixed wherever it lies.

Media reports indicated that among those killed were foreign nationals from Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique and Liberia. However, authorities have not yet released a complete official list of victims.
India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the government is coordinating with the embassies of the affected countries and providing all necessary assistance to the victims’ families.
