The government has revised the operating hours for markets, shops, and commercial centers across Pakistan, allowing businesses to remain open later than before. The decision is significant for retailers, consumers, and the services sector. Provincial governments will now be responsible for ensuring effective implementation of the updated schedule.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the committee overseeing austerity measures and their implementation. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar. Committee members reviewed ongoing energy-saving and cost-reduction measures before approving the revised timings.

Under the new schedule, shops, markets, shopping malls, and general retail businesses will be permitted to operate until 9pm. Restaurants and other food-related establishments will be allowed to remain open until 11pm. Authorities said the revised hours are intended to balance commercial activity with ongoing conservation measures.
The committee clarified that takeaway and delivery services will remain exempt from the restrictions. Wedding halls and event venues, however, must close by 10pm. Several essential services, including pharmacies, hospitals, petrol pumps, and information technology and telecommunications facilities, have also been exempted from the new operating hours.

Furthermore, the committee directed provincial governments to coordinate closely with the federal government to ensure compliance. Officials emphasized that effective enforcement will be necessary to achieve the objectives of the policy while minimizing disruption to businesses and consumers.
