AI-powered email attacks surge worldwide, billions of emails analyzed

Published on: May 18, 2026 9:50 PM

Cybercriminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to enhance phishing attacks, making email scams more convincing, scalable, and difficult to detect across global business and personal communication systems. A new cybersecurity report highlights how attackers now rely on AI-driven tools to automate and improve social engineering techniques at an alarming pace. Consequently, email security threats have reached unprecedented levels worldwide.

Researchers from Barracuda Networks analyzed more than 3.1 billion emails in January 2026 to understand evolving cyber threats across spam, phishing, and malicious content. The study found that attackers are shifting away from traditional malware files and increasingly using URL-based traps to deceive users. Moreover, criminals now embed hidden threats within trusted formats like PDFs to bypass detection systems.

The report shows that phishing-as-a-service platforms now dominate large-scale cyberattacks, allowing even low-skilled criminals to launch complex email campaigns. Nearly 90 percent of high-volume phishing operations used ready-made kits, while around 48 percent of malicious email activity involved phishing attempts. In addition, one in three emails analyzed was identified as spam or harmful content.

Security researchers also observed rising account takeover incidents, with 34 percent of companies facing at least one breach attempt every month. Attackers increasingly use QR codes hidden in documents, with over 70 percent of malicious PDF files redirecting users to fraudulent websites. Therefore, cybercriminals continue to exploit human trust rather than relying solely on traditional malware delivery systems.

Experts warn that AI-generated phishing emails now closely mimic real communication, making detection significantly harder for conventional antivirus tools. Barracuda Networks security leadership emphasized that email has become the primary battleground for identity protection and business continuity risks. Furthermore, they stressed the need for advanced security systems combining automated detection, identity protection, and real-time response capabilities.

Overall, the findings indicate a major shift in cybercrime strategy, where AI, automation, and social engineering work together to scale attacks globally. As attackers adopt more personalized and realistic communication tactics, organizations face increasing pressure to upgrade cybersecurity infrastructure. Ultimately, experts say proactive defense measures are now essential to reduce risks and prevent large-scale digital compromise.
