Researchers from Barracuda Networks analyzed more than 3.1 billion emails in January 2026 to understand evolving cyber threats across spam, phishing, and malicious content. Nearly 90 percent of high-volume phishing operations used ready-made kits, while around 48 percent of malicious email activity involved phishing attempts. In addition, one in three emails analyzed was identified as spam or harmful content.
Security researchers also observed rising account takeover incidents, with 34 percent of companies facing at least one breach attempt every month. Attackers increasingly use QR codes hidden in documents, with over 70 percent of malicious PDF files redirecting users to fraudulent websites. Therefore, cybercriminals continue to exploit human trust rather than relying solely on traditional malware delivery systems.
