The newly added charges include multiple counts of shooting with intent to murder, wounding with intent to murder, and discharging a firearm while attempting to resist arrest. Akram, who remains in high-security detention, has not yet entered a plea.
His father, Sajid Akram, who authorities allege was a co-conspirator, was killed during the police response to the attack. Investigators say the assault was “meticulously planned” over several months and involved firearms training conducted in rural areas of New South Wales.
Police reports released after the incident suggest that the attackers prepared extensively, with evidence including images of the suspects handling firearms and moving in coordinated, tactical formations. Authorities also revealed that a video recorded prior to the attack showed the suspects expressing extremist views and referencing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The case has prompted a national review into security failures and the rise of anti-Semitism in Australia. Officials have linked the attack to broader patterns of extremist violence and warned of the rapid escalation of hate-driven incidents.
In response, the Australian government announced reforms to gun laws, including a proposed nationwide buyback scheme. However, implementation has been delayed due to disagreements between federal and state authorities.
