Vote counting in key Indian state elections continued on Monday under tight security, with attention focused on West Bengal, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seeking crucial gains.

In West Bengal, the BJP mounted a strong challenge against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has governed the state of over 100 million people since 2011.

Exit polls released last week suggested a slight edge for the BJP, though polling predictions in India have often proven unreliable in past elections.

Political analysts said the results in West Bengal could significantly influence the national balance of power, as both parties traded confident claims ahead of counting.

Mamata Banerjee expressed confidence in victory, while BJP state leaders insisted voters wanted change and expected a decisive shift in power.

Other states including Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry were also counting votes, with varied projections for ruling and opposition parties.

The results are expected to strengthen or weaken Modi’s political standing as his government faces economic pressures and foreign policy challenges.

Security was tightened across counting centres, with officials monitoring proceedings closely amid concerns of potential unrest in sensitive areas.

Final results from West Bengal are seen as particularly decisive, with both BJP and TMC claiming momentum during the campaign. Observers say voter turnout, caste and community dynamics, and rural sentiment will play key roles in determining the outcome.

The Election Commission is expected to announce final tallies after completing verification processes, while political parties prepare for either celebrations or strategic reassessment depending on the results across all states and political implications will follow closely in coming days ahead.
