President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reiterated their commitment to protecting labour rights, ensuring fair wages and improving working conditions across Pakistan as the country marked International Labour Day.

In separate messages issued on May 1, both leaders paid tribute to workers and highlighted their role in driving the country’s economy and development. Labour Day is observed globally each year to recognise workers’ contributions and their historic struggle for better wages, safer workplaces and protection from exploitation.

President Zardari said the day commemorates the sacrifices of workers who fought for fundamental rights, including fair pay and regulated working hours. Referring to the historic Chicago labour movement, he highlighted the principle of “eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight hours for personal life” as a foundation of modern labour rights.
He noted that Pakistan’s 1973 Constitution guarantees protection against exploitation and obliges the state to promote equitable economic principles. The president praised workers from agriculture, industry and other sectors for their dedication, saying they remain central to national progress.
Zardari also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international labour standards, including fair wages, elimination of child and forced labour, workplace safety and non-discrimination. He stressed the importance of technical education, women’s participation in the workforce and job opportunities for youth.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described labourers, farmers, artisans, factory workers and professionals as the backbone of society, saying their hard work sustains the country’s economic and social systems.
He highlighted government initiatives under the National Skills Development Policy aimed at equipping workers with globally competitive skills, internationally recognised certifications and language training to improve overseas employment opportunities.

The prime minister also pointed to ongoing support through institutions such as the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution and Workers Welfare Fund, which provide pensions, housing, education and welfare services. Both leaders called on governments, employers, trade unions and international partners to work together to ensure dignity, safety and fair treatment for workers nationwide.
